Maria Hagströmer is a Professor in Physiotherapy at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, with a joint position at Region Stockholm's Academic Primary Care Centre. Her research focuses on physical activity patterns, public health, and exercise interventions, combining epidemiology and methodological innovation. She leads the Hagströmer research group and directs educational programs at the department.
Education: PhD in Biosciences and Nutrition (2007), Docent at Karolinska Institutet (2010), and degrees in Physiotherapy and Medical Science. Awards include the KI Pedagogic Academy (2011), Swedish Physiotherapist of the Year (2014), and KI Working Environment Prize (2018).
Research emphasizes population-level physical activity monitoring, health impacts of exercise, and intervention efficacy. Over 200 peer-reviewed publications and H-index 45 reflect her output. Major grants include Swedish Research Council funding for projects on Parkinson’s interventions, post-surgical rehabilitation, and diabetes prevention.
