Malin Nygren-Bonnier is a Senior Lecturer and Docent at Karolinska Institutet, holding a combined position between the Division of Physiotherapy, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) and the Medical Unit of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy at Karolinska University Hospital. She serves as head of the Division of Physiotherapy and leads the research group "Function and Health in Respiratory and Cardiovascular Conditions," bridging clinical practice, research, and education within physiotherapy.
Her academic credentials include:
- Docent (Associate Professor level), Karolinska Institutet, 2019
- Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Karolinska Institutet, 2008
- Master of Medical Science, Karolinska Institutet, 2003
Dr. Nygren-Bonnier's research focuses on physiotherapeutic interventions for individuals with decreased lung function due to post-COVID-19 syndrome, neuromuscular disorders, COPD, cystic fibrosis, and preoperative/postoperative rehabilitation needs. Her work emphasizes developing evidence-based interventions to improve physical and mental function, health-related quality of life, and work performance across the lifespan. She takes a holistic approach that spans from acute care to long-term rehabilitation, with particular attention to respiratory and cardiovascular health.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on post-COVID-19 rehabilitation, particularly addressing long-term symptoms through tailored interventions. Her research spans cancer rehabilitation, cardiovascular conditions, neuromuscular disorders, and early mobilization after surgery, with significant use of randomized controlled trials and qualitative studies examining both clinical outcomes and patient experiences.
Her notable scientific achievements include:
- Physiotherapist of the Year 2021, awarded by the Swedish Association of Physiotherapists for her work with rehabilitation after COVID-19
- Research grant from the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation (SEK 400,000) for developing tailored interventions for long COVID-19 patients
- Participation in research receiving SEK 6.5 million in funding for COVID-19 research
Dr. Nygren-Bonnier has extensive supervisory experience across all academic levels, having served as Programme Director for the Study Programme in Physiotherapy (2012-2018). Her research receives substantial support from the Swedish Research Council and Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, focusing on critical areas including post-acute COVID-19 syndrome, cancer rehabilitation, and cardiovascular health outcomes.
Her research group works from a physiotherapeutic perspective to promote physically active lives and healthy aging, developing evidence-based training programs and examining predictors for future health outcomes across diverse patient populations.
