Dr. Margaret Shanafield is an Associate Professor at Flinders University, affiliated with the College of Science and Engineering and the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training. Since 2021, she has split her time between academic research and environmental law, working as a scientist at the Environmental Defenders Office, South Australia. Her research focuses on hydrology and hydrogeology in arid regions, particularly groundwater recharge, surface water-groundwater interactions, and ecohydrology.
Education: PhD in Hydrogeology (University of Nevada, Reno, 2010), M.S. in Hydrology (University of Nevada, Reno, 2004), B.A. in Environmental Science (Northwestern University, 2000). She has held roles including ARC DECRA Fellow (2015–2019) and contributed to projects like the Coorong freshwater soaks initiative and studies on the Colorado River Delta.
Research interests include understanding streambed functioning, groundwater recharge dynamics, and integrating multi-disciplinary approaches to address water resource challenges. Awards include the 2023 Groundwater Innovation Award and the 2020 Young Tall Poppy Science Award.
She advises over 14 students, including recent PhD graduates Nastaran Chitsaz and Amirhossein Shadmeri. Grants include ARC DECRA and U.S. Civilian Research Defense Fund support. Collaborations span international teams in climate law and hydrological research.
Labs/Teams: Active in the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training, and part of the Climate Research Forum (Oxford-based). Her work bridges science communication and policy, with media features in The Conversation and Australasian Science.
