Professor Peter Cook is a leading groundwater scientist and Professor of Hydrogeology at Flinders University, directing the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT). He holds a PhD from Flinders University (1989-1992) and a BA from the Australian National University (1983-1986). His research focuses on groundwater hydrology, ecohydrology, isotope hydrology, and surface water-groundwater interaction, with notable contributions to semi-arid groundwater dynamics and environmental tracer applications. Awards include the Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer (2009), the CSIRO Chairmans Medal (2008), and the Australian National University Medalist (1986).
Key research areas include groundwater recharge mechanisms, fractured rock hydrogeology, and coastal hydrogeology. He advises government and industry on water resource management, emphasizing sustainable practices in mining and arid regions. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water and climate action.
Over 190 publications span peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book contributions. Notable recent works address managed aquifer recharge in mining contexts, hydraulic evolution of pit lakes, and tracer-based groundwater age dating. Collaborations span global institutions, reflecting his leadership in international groundwater research.
