Margaret Levi is a Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and the Woods Institute for the Environment. She holds the title of Jere L. Bacharach Professor Emerita of International Studies at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on comparative politics, political economy, governance, and the intersection of technology and ethics. Levi has held prestigious roles including Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) and has been a visiting scholar at institutions worldwide.
Levi earned an A.B. in Political Science from Bryn Mawr College (1968) and a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University (1974). Her career includes leadership as President of the American Political Science Association (2004-2005) and co-direction of Stanford’s Ethics, Society and Technology initiative. She has authored six books, including *A Moral Political Economy* (2021) and *In the Interest of Others* (2013), exploring organizational behavior and governmental legitimacy.
Her research interests span governance legitimacy, AI ethics, labor rights, and global institutions. Notable awards include the 2019 Johan Skytte Prize and 2020 Falling Walls Prize. She serves on boards such as the Berggruen Institute and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).
