Marco Morsch is an Associate Professor and Co-Director of Research at the Macquarie Medical School, Macquarie University. He leads a neurodegeneration research group focusing on motor neuron diseases (MND/ALS) using zebrafish models. He holds a PhD from the University of Bonn and completed a postdoc at the University of Sydney before joining Macquarie in 2014.
- Education: PhD (University of Bonn), Postdoc (University of Sydney)
- Affiliations: Macquarie Medical School, Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre
- Roles: Group Leader, Co-Director of Research
His research combines advanced microscopy and molecular tools to study neurodegeneration mechanisms, including TDP-43 phase separation and protein aggregation. He pioneered Australia's first zebrafish platform for real-time CNS imaging, addressing critical gaps in preclinical models.
Key achievements include groundbreaking work on TDP-43 biology and methylmercury bioremediation. Awards include the 2018 'Outstanding mid-career researcher' and 2020 Academic Of The Year.
Current projects involve developing gene therapies for ALS and investigating TDP-43 condensation mechanisms. His lab offers PhD/Masters opportunities in neuron-glia interactions and MND.
Collaborations span international institutions, with active grants from NHMRC and NIH. Media engagement includes public science festivals and outreach on motor neuron disease research.
