Professor Marcel Nold is a consultant neonatologist at Monash Newborn, Monash Health, Professor of Pediatric Immunology in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University, and a clinician-scientist at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research. His work bridges clinical practice and cutting-edge research in neonatal inflammation and immunology.
His research focuses on cytokine biology, particularly the role of IL-37 in inflammation, with applications in preterm infant diseases such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia and necrotizing enterocolitis. He leads the Inflammation in Neonatal Diseases Research Group, aiming to develop interventional immunology strategies for cardiopulmonary and intestinal conditions in neonates.
Recent publications (2023–2025) highlight continued leadership in neonatal immunology, vaccine safety, cytokine signaling, and inflammatory disease mechanisms. His work spans basic discovery, translational development, and clinical application, including collaborations with pharmaceutical partners and the development of novel biologics.
- Discovery of IL-37's anti-inflammatory function (2010)
- Identification of IL-37 receptor and structural determinants (2015)
- Development of modified IL-37 as immunotherapeutic
- Active research in preterm cardiovascular and intestinal inflammation
Prof Nold is a co-founder and Clinical Scientific Officer of a start-up company focused on cytokine therapies, supported by life science venture capital. He holds multiple patents related to cytokine biology and has been a Chief Investigator on numerous funded projects, including NHMRC and internal university grants. His research group actively contributes to advancing neonatal care through innovative science.
He is affiliated with Monash University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, where he conducts both academic and translational research. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being.
