Marc Epprecht is a Professor of Global Development Studies at Queen's University, cross-appointed to the Department of History, Cultural Studies, and the School of Environmental Studies. He holds a PhD in History from Dalhousie University. His research focuses on social history in southern Africa, gender and sexuality, HIV/AIDS, environment and health, and development practices across Africa.
Key research interests include colonial-era social dynamics, cultural constructions of non-normative sexualities (LGBTQI+), contestations over masculinities, and the politics of public history. He has supervised diverse student projects addressing topics like LGBTQ+ activism in East Africa, the impact of climate crisis on environmental charities, and the role of gender in South African social medicine.
His publications span edited volumes, monographs, and journal articles, including Hungochani: The History of a Dissident Sexuality in Southern Africa and Heterosexual Africa? Recent work explores decolonizing African art collections in Canada, urban environmental justice, and post-development theory.
Epprecht’s academic contributions emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to understanding African societies, with a focus on empowering African scholars and rethinking homophobia through intersectional frameworks. His cross-departmental affiliations reflect his commitment to holistic, multi-disciplinary scholarship.
