James Joseph Dean is a Professor of Sociology at Sonoma State University, specializing in sexualities, gender, and digital sociology. He holds a PhD from the State University of New York at Albany and a BA from Pomona College. His research examines LGBTQ+ visibility, social media influencers, and the evolving dynamics of heterosexual identities in post-closeted culture.
Dean’s work includes the co-edited Routledge International Handbook of Heterosexualities Studies (2020) and his seminal book Straights: Heterosexuality in Post-Closeted Culture (2014). His current project analyzes beauty and fitness influencers on Instagram, focusing on LGBTQ+ content creation and platform precarity.
His publications span topics such as hegemonic masculinity, queer theory, and the cultural construction of sexual identities. Dean’s research highlights how heterosexual individuals navigate visibility and identity in an increasingly out LGBTQ+ context, emphasizing anti-homophobias and intersectional dynamics.
His advising focus is general academic guidance. Office hours are held in-person or via Zoom in Stevenson Hall 3108.
