Jane Ward is a Professor of Feminist Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the College of Letters and Science. She holds a PhD in Sociology from UCSB and a B.A. in Sociology, though the latter’s institution isn’t specified. Her research focuses on feminist and queer theory, sex practices and cultures, dismantling patriarchal systems, and creating feminist futures, with a notable interest in witchcraft.
Her work critiques heteronormativity, explores queer methodologies, and examines intersections of race, gender, and sexuality in activism and media. Notable publications include The Tragedy of Heterosexuality (2020), awarded the 2020 Prose Award, and Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men (2015), widely cited in media outlets. Earlier work includes Respectably Queer (2008), recognized as a best book by The Progressive.
Ward’s articles span topics like queer pedagogy, the cultural politics of heterosexuality, and the racial dimensions of LGBTQ+ movements. Her research often bridges academic rigor with activism, emphasizing practical guides for gender self-determination in childhood and critiquing corporate influences on queer spaces.
She has received accolades such as Lambda Literary Award nominations and the Prose Award. Beyond academia, Ward is an organizer, crafter, and parent to a child, cat, and chickens. Her work advocates for radical social change through intersectional, queered frameworks.
