Marc Stein is the Jamie and Phyllis Pasker Professor of History at San Francisco State University, specializing in U.S. constitutional law, social movements, gender, race, and sexuality. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (1994) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University (1985). His research focuses on LGBTQ+ history, including Supreme Court decisions, queer activism, and sexual politics. Stein has held academic positions at York University (1998–2016) and Colby College (1996–98), among others. He is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Marcus Transformative Research Award (2024–25) and the Audre Lorde Prize (2006).
Stein’s work spans books, edited volumes, peer-reviewed articles, and digital history projects. Notable publications include Queer Public History (2022), The Stonewall Riots: A Documentary History (2019), and Rethinking the Gay and Lesbian Movement (2012). He has also contributed to public lectures, media appearances, and community-based initiatives, emphasizing the intersection of scholarship and activism.
His teaching covers constitutional law, LGBTQ+ history, and social movements. Stein has supervised numerous graduate students and served in various academic leadership roles, including Vice President of the Organization of American Historians (2024–27). His research often addresses police violence, legal strategies, and the historical roots of contemporary LGBTQ+ struggles.
