Stephen M. Engel is Professor of Politics and Associate Dean of the Faculty at Bates College, with affiliated scholar status at the American Bar Foundation. Holding a PhD from Yale University, his research examines American political development, constitutional law, and LGBTQ+ social movements through archival analysis and qualitative methods.
Key research domains include:
- LGBTQ+ legal mobilization and citizenship
- Constitutional interpretation and judicial power
- Progressive Era political reforms
- Social movement theory
Honors include the 2018 Kroepsch Teaching Award and grants from NSF, American Bar Foundation, and Yale research centers. Authored four books analyzing gay/lesbian civil rights and progressive constitutionalism.
Current courses include Constitutional Law, Queer Power, and U.S. Political Development. Serving as Associate Dean focusing on First-Year Experience and academic advising.
