Professor Daniel Pinello is a faculty member at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, part of the City University of New York (CUNY). He holds a PhD from Yale University, a JD from New York University, and a BA from Williams College. His scholarly work focuses on the intersection of LGBTQ rights, judicial politics, and constitutional law, with particular emphasis on same-sex marriage, judicial ideology, and legal mobilization.

His research spans three decades, including influential publications like Gay Rights and American Law (2003), America’s Struggle for Same-Sex Marriage (2006), and his 2017 book America's War on Same-Sex Couples which analyzes legal battles over LGBTQ family rights. His meta-analysis on party affiliation and judicial ideology (1999) established empirical patterns in American courts. The Yale University Department of Manuscripts and Archives preserves his extensive research collection of 300+ interviews with same-sex couples and activists.
Professor Pinello teaches courses on American government, judicial processes, and LGBTQ rights in law. He has served on prestigious committees including the American Political Science Association's Committee on LGBTQ Status in the Profession and the Law and Society Association's Dissertation Prize Committee. His peer-review contributions span organizations like the National Science Foundation and publishers including Cambridge University Press and Stanford University Press.
