Dr Tanya Cheadle is a Lecturer in Gender History at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the Centre for Gender History. Her research focuses on modern histories of masculinities, sexualities, and esoteric subcultures, particularly in Scotland and global contexts. She examines the intersection of heterodox belief systems with gender and sexuality during the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Her recent projects include the Carnegie-funded Adepts of Manhood (2021-22), exploring occult subcultures' impact on masculinity, and the Glasgow-Radboud Collaboration project Normative Esotericism (2023-24), critiquing whiteness and normativity in esoteric studies.
Dr Cheadle has published widely, including her monograph Sexual Progressives: Rethinking Intimacy in Late Victorian Scotland (2020), which received high commendation from the Women’s History Network. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and actively contributes to editorial and professional roles, including Book Reviews Editor for Women’s History Review.
Teaching focuses on hybrid and online pedagogy, with courses like A Global History of Sex and Gender (FutureLearn MOOC) and Gender, Sexuality and Modernity in Scotland. She emphasizes intersectional feminist approaches and collaboration, co-creating resources with institutions like Glasgow Women’s Library and the Smithsonian Institution.
