Efram Sera-Shriar is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies at the University of Copenhagen, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities. He also serves as Associate Director of Research at Durham University’s Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies International. With nearly two decades in academia and museums, he holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Leeds, an MA in History from York University Toronto, and a BA in Anthropology and History from York University Toronto.
His research focuses on Victorian science, occultism, and their intersections. He has authored two monographs: The Making of British Anthropology, 1813 to 1871 (2013) and Psychic Investigators: Anthropology, Modern Spiritualism, and Credible Witnessing in the Late Victorian Age (2022). Recent projects include Otherworldly Entertainment, a Carlsberg Foundation-funded study on occult-themed video games during 1980s Satanic Panic, and co-curating a video game exhibition at the Enigma Museum. He pioneered game studies in the University of Copenhagen’s English program and co-founded the Dark Arts Research Group (2023) and Video Game Lab (2024).
Teaching includes core English studies modules, digital humanities, and fantasy literature. He advises interdisciplinary projects blending literature, history, anthropology, and cultural studies.
Key Collaborations: Media of Mediumship (AHRC-funded), Victorian Interdisciplinarity projects, and transnational science studies with Japan and Scotland.
