Mandy Pierlejewski serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University. She leads Level 6 undergraduate primary education degrees and supervises MA and doctoral students. Her academic base is at Caedmon, Headingley Campus.
Her research focuses on the datafication of early years education, examining how data collection impacts pedagogy and child subjectivity. She developed the 'doppelganger as method' approach for investigating power dynamics in educational conflicts, which involves analyzing where secondary versions of subjects exist and function as technologies of power. Current research examines teacher education policy changes and further development of her methodological framework.
Her publications reveal consistent critique of standardized testing in early years, particularly highlighting how assessment regimes harm child development and mental health. She advocates for play-based learning approaches aligned with neuroscience research on brain development.
She actively supervises MA students in Childhood Studies and Early Years programs, along with doctoral candidates. Her teaching responsibilities include communication and language skills (covering first and second language acquisition), music education at Levels 4-5, and dissertation supervision for Primary 3-7 QTS degrees where she specializes in research methodology.
Her current teaching portfolio spans multiple primary education pathways including BA (Hons) Primary Education 3-11, 3-7, and 5-11 degrees, covering modules such as Language/Communication/Literacy, Emerging Curriculum Studies, National Curriculum, Teacher Practitioner Independent Study, and Teaching and Learning 3.
