Dr. Mandi Baker is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management. Her work bridges sociological theory with practical applications in leisure studies, focusing on ethical leadership, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and gender dynamics in outdoor recreation. She holds a PhD from Griffith University and a BA from the University of Waterloo, specializing in Leisure Studies. Dr. Baker's research examines emotion work, power relations in service industries, and sustainable leadership practices, with a particular emphasis on summer camps and clinical settings.
Dr. Baker actively collaborates with industry partners through roles on the American Camp Association’s Research and Evaluation Committee and Outward Bound Vietnam’s Governing Board. She co-hosts the podcast *The Pudding*, exploring camp research, and serves on editorial boards for the *World Leisure Journal* and *Journal of Youth Development*. Her recent work includes a SSHRC Engage Grant ($25,000) investigating queer youth inclusion in summer camps.
Her awards include the 2022 Research for Impact Award from Torrens University and the 2016 Excellence in Research Award from the Canadian Camping Association. Dr. Baker teaches across leisure studies, DEI, and qualitative research methods, and is currently accepting master’s and PhD students.
