Jill Overholt is a Professor at Warren Wilson College, specializing in Outdoor Leadership and Experiential Education. Her career spans roles in the Peace Corps, Outward Bound, and summer camps, reflecting a lifelong commitment to connecting people with nature for personal and communal growth. She holds a Ph.D. in Leisure Behavior from Indiana University, complementing her B.S. and M.S. in Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management from the same institution.
Her research focuses on the intersection of natural environments and human health, parent-child relationship development through outdoor adventures, and experiential education in higher education. She teaches courses like ODL 2410: Natural Environments and Human Health and ODL 3251: Universal Adventure Programming.
Jill serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Experiential Education and is a member of the Association for Experiential Education. She also contributes to the Evergreen Community Charter School as a board member, extending her educational outreach beyond academia.
Her research emphasizes nature as a tool for health promotion and family bonding, with recent work exploring gender dynamics in resilience-building through outdoor activities. She advocates for nature-based interventions as cost-effective healthcare solutions, as seen in her 2018 study on hiking's health benefits.
