Dr. Mahmut Cengiz is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society at George Mason University (GMU), where he teaches courses on terrorism. He is also a Research Scholar at GMU's Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC), contributing to projects focusing on Syria and transnational crime dynamics. His expertise spans transnational crime, terrorism financing, human trafficking, and Middle Eastern geopolitical issues.
Dr. Cengiz holds two master's degrees and two doctorates from institutions in Turkey and the U.S. His academic background includes criminal justice, sociology, and public policy. He has authored five books and numerous articles on topics such as organized crime, smuggling, and terrorist financing.
His research interests emphasize the intersection of crime, terrorism, and policy, particularly in the Middle East. Recent projects include a Brookings Institution study on drug trafficking and terrorism linkages and a co-authored book on Turkey's illicit economy amid the Syrian crisis. He frequently engages in international forums discussing transnational crime and corruption.
Dr. Cengiz’s publications span diverse methodologies, from historical case studies to quantitative analyses of social media polarization. His work bridges theory and field experience, offering insights into global security challenges.
