Layla M. Hashemi is a Professorial Lecturer (part-time) at George Mason University and George Washington University, specializing in transnational crime and public policy. She holds a PhD from George Mason University’s Schar School and an MA from New York University. Her roles include Director of Programs at Women In International Security (WIIS), researcher at the Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC), and Managing Editor at the Journal of Civil Society.
Her research focuses on illicit trade, cybercrime, and antiquities smuggling, particularly in conflict regions. She has presented at NATO and the UN, and co-edited the Routledge volume Antiquities Smuggling in the Real and Virtual World (2022). Layla also volunteers with organizations like the Anti-Corruption Advocacy Network (ACAN) and the Security, Gender and Development Institute (SGDI).
Prior roles include over a decade teaching at Montgomery College and advisory positions with NGOs such as Forum 2000. Her work bridges policy, academia, and advocacy to address global security challenges.
