Professor Andreas Schloenhardt is Professor of Criminal Law at The University of Queensland's School of Law in Brisbane, Australia, and Honorary Professor for Foreign and International Criminal Law at the University of Vienna's Department of Criminal Law and Criminology in Austria. He serves as convenor of the Transnational Organised Crime programme, a research and learning network connecting academic institutions across Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Australia.
His research focuses on criminal law, organised crime, smuggling of migrants, trafficking in persons, wildlife trafficking, narco-trafficking, terrorism, criminology, and immigration and refugee law. Professor Schloenhardt's work has significantly shaped international and domestic laws and policies, including the Legislative Guide for the Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, the Assessment Guide for the Criminal Justice Response to Smuggling of Migrants, and the Wildlife and Forest Crime Analytical Toolkit.
His publications demonstrate a strong focus on transnational criminal justice, with recent works examining the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, joint investigations frameworks, smuggling of migrants, and wildlife trafficking. His scholarly output spans books, journal articles, book chapters, and conference publications addressing critical issues in international criminal law.
Professor Schloenhardt has received recognition including a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship (2011-2012) and has worked extensively with international organizations including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Council of Europe, the Global Initiative against Transnational Crime, and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).
As a dedicated educator, Professor Schloenhardt has supervised numerous doctoral students on topics related to migrant smuggling, trafficking in persons, and criminal justice responses. He has developed significant grant-funded research projects examining migrant smuggling, human trafficking, and organized crime in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. His work extends to advising government agencies and contributing to legislative development in multiple jurisdictions.
