Magdalena Kuchler is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor (Docent) in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU) at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University. She serves as the Program Manager for the Master’s Program in Sustainable Development. Her research is supported by major grants from the Swedish Research Council, Formas, and the Swedish Energy Agency, reflecting her leadership in interdisciplinary energy and climate research.
Her research interests center on the socio-political dimensions of energy and climate transitions. Key areas include energy and climate governance, socio-technical imaginaries, fossil fuel dependencies, resource materialities, and urban subsurface planning. She investigates how energy futures are envisioned, governed, and contested, with a particular focus on carbon-intensive societies and the role of regional policy.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend in analyzing future imaginaries across diverse contexts—from coal in Poland and shale gas in Europe to offshore energy in the UK and subsurface urban development in Stockholm. Her work consistently employs interdisciplinary frameworks, bridging social sciences with natural sciences to understand complex energy and environmental challenges.
She has received significant research funding, including:
- SEK 10.4 million from the Swedish Research Council for 'Disassembling the power of high-carbon imaginaries'
- SEK 8 million from Formas for 'SubCity: Future imaginaries of the city subsurface'
- SEK 6 million from the Swedish Energy Agency for 'Integration of regional carbon budgets into regional climate policy'
Magdalena Kuchler leads an interdisciplinary research team that collaborates across fields such as geophysics, geography, ecology, and architecture. Her research environment fosters integration between social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences to develop holistic solutions for sustainable resource management and energy transitions.
