Magdalena Markowska is an Associate Professor at the Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE), Umeå University, within the Department of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship. She holds a Docent qualification and is a Recognised University Teacher. Her research focuses on entrepreneurship with emphasis on identity construction, gender dynamics, institutional contexts, and entrepreneurial agency. Key areas include mumpreneurship, women's entrepreneurship in diverse cultural settings, and food innovation ventures.
Her work explores how family-friendly policies in Sweden enable maternal entrepreneurship, particularly through parental leave timing coordination. She has secured over 16 million SEK in research grants, including projects from the Swedish Research Council and Hakon Swenson Foundation. Recent projects investigate plant-based food entrepreneurship and retail ventures led by women.
Markowska's research methods emphasize qualitative approaches, with notable contributions on entrepreneurial identification processes, storying in regional identity creation, and contextual adaptation of learning. Her work has been recognized with awards, including a highly commended paper from Entrepreneurship & Regional Development (2021).
