Johannes Stripple is Associate Professor at Lund University's Department of Political Science and Principal Investigator for BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate). He specializes in climate governance, political theory, and environmental policy with particular expertise in carbon markets, plastic crisis governance, and decarbonization strategies. His research bridges theoretical political science with practical policy implementation through multiple funded projects including the 'Climaginaries' research project (Formas) and 'Narrating Climate Futures' initiative (Lund University VC).
Stripple completed his Ph.L. in Environmental Science at Linneus University (2001) and Ph.D. in Political Science at Lund University (2005), being appointed associate professor in 2011. His research interests focus on the intersection of critical political theory and climate governance, examining European and international climate policy, carbon markets, renewable energy, climate security, and urban politics of decarbonization. Recent work has increasingly addressed plastic governance and the cultural dimensions of climate change.
His extensive publication record shows a clear trend toward interdisciplinary work connecting climate policy with plastic governance, cultural studies, and participatory methods. The most recent articles (2023-2024) demonstrate growing focus on plastic governance, with multiple publications analyzing UN treaty negotiations, European plastic production, and policy recommendations for capping primary plastics. Earlier work (2020-2022) explored climate imaginaries, carbon ruins, and urban decarbonization strategies, reflecting his evolving research trajectory toward more tangible governance challenges.
- Outstanding achievement for Lund University (2014) for establishing a clean-tech center of excellence in Botswana
Stripple has extensive policy engagement experience, having conducted commissioned research for Defra (UK), the Swedish EPA, and provided advisory work for the Swedish Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Finance. His current projects include the Governing Climate Change project (Formas, €0.8M), ClimateColl (Swedish Energy Agency), and multiple Horizon Europe initiatives. He leads the 'Climaginaries' project and co-leads the 'Narrating Climate Futures' initiative, demonstrating strong leadership in climate governance research.
Stripple is embedded in multiple research environments including BECC, LU's Nature-based Future Solutions profile area, and participates in the NATURESCAPES project (Horizon Europe) and Plastics in a Circular Society project (FORMAS). His collaborative networks span environmental scientists, political theorists, and practitioners working on climate governance and plastic pollution solutions.
