Dr. Machteld Hylkema is an Associate Professor at the Department of Pathology and Medical Biology at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). She holds a Master's in Biology from Leiden University (1991) and a PhD in Immunology from Amsterdam (1995). Her research focuses on lung pathology, immunology, and epigenetics, particularly studying prenatal smoking effects on asthma/COPD susceptibility and extracellular vesicles' role in lung repair. She has secured €2.5M+ in grants and authored >110 papers. Since 2018, she directs the Erasmus+ IMIM master's program. She is editorial board member of American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology and serves on the Swedish Research Council panel.
