M.E. Sparks is a Lecturer at the School of Art, University of Manitoba. Her practice investigates ambiguities of representation, historical narratives, and patriarchal perspectives through painting and canvas installations. She explores the dislocation of forms from their origins and the transformative potential of uncertainty in art.
Sparks holds an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and a BFA from NSCAD University. Her research focuses on:
- Reconciliation and transformation of historical narratives
- Feminist reinterpretations of mid-20th-century depictions of femininity
- Installation-based explorations of abstract and figurative boundaries
- Material experimentation with oil, acrylic, and unconventional canvas treatments
Sparks has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, BC Arts Council, and Arts Nova Scotia. Notable exhibitions include solo shows at Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art and Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art, as well as two-person exhibitions at Trapp Projects. She has participated in international residencies in Canada, Germany, and Finland.
