Ufuk Ali Gueray is Assistant Professor of Fine Arts (Painting) at NSCAD University, working at the intersection of cultural heritage, identity, and technology. Their interdisciplinary practice integrates painting, installation, and generative AI to reinterpret ancient cultural texts like the Turkic divination manuscript Irk Bitig. Research explores materiality in painting as a site of historical accumulation and contemporary transformation.
Gueray's creative research examines cultural translation through projects like Atilla's Mirror Shop—an itinerant installation reconstructing familial memory through fragmented mirrors and soundscapes. Recent work with AI systems investigates algorithmic divination and unstable cultural transmission. Their practice demonstrates consistent engagement with themes of cultural displacement, material erasure, and technological reinterpretation of heritage artifacts.
Supported by major grants from Canada Council for the Arts and Arts Nova Scotia, Gueray's exhibitions have been presented internationally, including at Hermes Gallery (Halifax), Neutral Ground Artist-Run Centre (Regina), and Platforms Project (Athens).
