Dr. Darrell Varga is a Professor of Historical and Critical Studies at NSCAD University, holding the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) since 2005. His academic career spans over two decades, focusing on documentary filmmaking, Canadian cinema, and cultural politics. He teaches film history, visual culture, and film production in the Division of Media Arts. Varga’s research explores regional film practices, national cinema, and the intersection of class and media culture.
Education: PhD in Social and Political Thought (York University), MFA in Film Production (York University), BA in Film Studies and Theatre (University of Manitoba).
Research interests include documentary filmmaking practices, regional cinema in Atlantic Canada, experimental film, and the socio-economic representation of class in media. His 2020 documentary Bread in the Bones won awards at the Atlantic Film Festival and Ambrosia Film Food and Drink Festival.
His scholarly work emphasizes Canadian cinema’s regional dynamics, with key publications like Shooting from the East: Filmmaking on the Canadian Atlantic and Working on Screen: Representations of the Working Class in Canadian Cinema (co-edited). His articles critically analyze documentary theory, national cinema, and class representation across American, European, and Canadian contexts.
Awards include CRC Tier II (2005), Best Feature Documentary for Bread in the Bones, and recognition for contributions to cultural studies. Varga’s work bridges filmmaking practice with academic scholarship, advocating for marginalized voices and regional cultural narratives.
