Murat Akser is a Senior Lecturer in Screen Production at the School of Communication and Media, Ulster University. He holds a PhD in Communication and Culture from York University, Canada, and has taught at institutions including Bosphorus University, Ryerson University, and the University of Toronto. His research focuses on independent filmmaking, film genre storytelling, and Turkish cinema, with notable works including New Cinema, New Media: Reinventing Turkish Cinema and Alternative Media in Contemporary Turkey. Akser is also an accomplished filmmaker, with his short film The Gift winning Best International Short Film at the Dublin Silk Road Festival. He has supervised PhD projects on topics ranging from queer filmmaking to transnational horror audiences.

Research Interests: Independent cinema practices (Dogme, New Turkish Cinema), film parody, media democracy, and alternative media production. He explores themes like intertextuality, cultural identity, and political resistance through film studies.
Awards: Winner, Best Short Film (2018) for The Gift. Recognized in Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab (2014) for Rise and Fall.
Teaching & Supervision: Current PhD supervision includes projects on Kurdish documentary cinema and post-2001 Chinese women directors. Teaches Screenwriting, Editing, and Short Film Production. Previously taught modules like Web Series and Feature Screenwriting.
Professional Memberships: Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), European Communication Research Association (ECREA), and others. Served on the Executive Board of the European Communication Association (2016–2021).
