Lucy Yardley

Professor Lucy Yardley OBE is a Professorial Fellow-Research at the University of Southampton, leading major digital health intervention projects funded by NIHR, Wellcome Trust, and EU programs. With over £50 million in research funding, she pioneers the Person-Based Approach to developing web-based healthcare tools.

Her research focuses on empowering patients through digital self-management for conditions including cancer survivorship, hypertension, diabetes, eczema, and respiratory infections. Key projects include Eczema Care Online, HeLP-Diabetes, and interventions for reducing antibiotic overuse. Her Person-Based Approach methodology (www.personbasedapproach.org) integrates qualitative insights into intervention design, resulting in high-impact publications in The Lancet and BMJ.

Recent work analyzes implementation of digital tools in primary care, including FeNO-guided asthma management and saline irrigation for sinusitis. Her 2024-2025 publications demonstrate active leadership in randomized controlled trials and process evaluations across multiple health domains.

Professor Yardley directs a research program developing digital interventions for weight management, physical activity, infection control, and chronic disease self-management.
