Dr. Lori A. Erickson is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, specializing in Endocrine Pathology and Dermatopathology. With over two decades of clinical and academic experience, she has established herself as a leading expert in thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and renal neoplasia. Her work spans diagnostic pathology, molecular characterization of tumors, and development of standardized reporting protocols through international collaborations.
Dr. Erickson earned her MD from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 1996, followed by residency and fellowship training at Mayo Clinic, including specialized training in Dermatopathology at Harvard Medical School. Her educational journey reflects a strong foundation in both clinical pathology and specialized diagnostic techniques.
Her research interests focus on endocrine neoplasia, particularly thyroid and parathyroid tumors, with emphasis on molecular characterization, diagnostic criteria development, and cancer reporting standards. She has made significant contributions to the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting, serving on multiple disease-specific working groups for endocrine tumors. Her work bridges traditional histopathology with modern molecular diagnostics to improve patient care and standardize diagnostic criteria globally.
Analysis of Dr. Erickson's recent publications reveals a strong focus on rare endocrine tumors, molecular markers in penile squamous cell carcinoma, sarcomas, and renal neoplasia. Her work demonstrates expertise across multiple organ systems with particular emphasis on diagnostic challenges in endocrine pathology and the application of molecular techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy.
Among her notable recognitions are the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year Award (2008) and Excellence in Teaching Recognition (2001), reflecting her commitment to education. She has received multiple academic honors including Magna Cum Laude from Augustana College and various scholarship awards during her undergraduate studies.
Dr. Erickson has held numerous leadership positions including Vice Chair for Education in the Division of Anatomic Pathology (2010-2016), President of the Endocrine Pathology Society (2018-2019), and active participation in the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. She serves as Director of the Biospecimen Resource Biorepository for the North Central Cancer Treatment Group and contributes to National Cancer Institute committees focused on biorepository standards.
Her laboratory work centers on the Endocrine Pathology and Dermatopathology working groups within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. She collaborates extensively with the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and participates in multiple international pathology consortia focused on standardizing diagnostic criteria for challenging tumor types.
