Professor Loretta Bass is a sociologist at the University of Oklahoma's Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Sociology. She holds the Edith Kinney Gaylord Presidential Professorship and was selected for the 2023-24 Jefferson Science Fellowship at the US Agency for International Development. Her work focuses on international migration, child labor, stratification, and human rights in global contexts.
She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Connecticut (1998) and served at the U.S. Census Bureau's Population Division. Her research includes books like African Immigrant Families in Another France (2014) and Child Labor in Sub-Saharan Africa (2004). She currently serves as Series Editor for Sociological Studies of Children and Youth and holds leadership roles in the American Sociological Association and International Sociological Association.
Bass's research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, UNFPA, and others. Her work explores migration integration, child welfare, and policy impacts on marginalized groups. She has advised numerous students and contributed to over 100 publications spanning migration studies, child rights, and demographic analysis.
