Lorenz Lüthi is a Professor in the Department of History at McGill University, specializing in 20th-century global history with a focus on the Cold War, international relations, and communist bloc dynamics. His work integrates archival research from multiple continents, emphasizing the roles of smaller and middle powers in shaping Cold War outcomes. He holds a PhD from Yale University (2003) and a lic. phil. from the University of Zürich (1995).
Research Interests:
- Cold War history across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East
- International relations frameworks post-1945
- Comparative analysis of Soviet Union and Communist China policies
- Long-term geopolitical and economic impacts of Cold War strategies
His major publications include Cold Wars: Asia, the Middle East, Europe (Cambridge, 2020) and The Sino-Soviet Split (Princeton, 2008). Current research focuses on a new book project on the Cold War in Europe funded by SSHRC and FQRSC grants.
Teaching: Courses include HIST 302 (International Relations History 1750-1950) and HIST 552 (International Relations Seminar). Supervises graduate students in Cold War and international history.
