Prof. Lorand Bartels MBE is a Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Law, specializing in WTO law, trade agreements, and human rights in international trade. He holds degrees from the University of New South Wales and a PhD from the European University Institute. He advises governments, NGOs, and international organizations on trade law and has been appointed to key roles, including Chair of the UK Trade and Agriculture Commission and arbitrator for the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
Education: BA(Hons) and LLB from UNSW (1996), PhD from European University Institute (2002). Recognized with an MBE (2022) for contributions to UK trade policy.
Research focuses on WTO dispute settlement, regional trade agreements, human rights conditionality in trade deals, and EU external policies. His work emphasizes legal coherence between trade, human rights, and environmental standards. Recent contributions include advising on UK-Australia and UK-New Zealand FTAs, analyzing Energy Charter Treaty exit strategies, and evaluating human rights clauses in EPAs post-Cotonou.
Publications span over 30 books and articles, including Exceptions in International Law and Bilateral and Regional Trade Agreements. He co-edits the Cambridge International Trade and Economic Law Series and serves on editorial boards for Journal of International Economic Law and others.
Professional roles include counsel at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, member of the UK National Contact Point for OECD Guidelines, and contributor to WTO reform discussions. His work bridges legal scholarship with practical policy advice, addressing contemporary challenges in global trade governance.
