Emily Reid is Professor of International Economic Law and Sustainable Development at Southampton Law School, University of Southampton, and Director of the Centre for International Law and Globalisation. She holds joint appointments with the Institute of Maritime Law and Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute. Her education includes an LLB from University of Edinburgh, LLM from University of Durham, and PhD from University of Southampton.
Research interests focus on regulatory balancing between economic and non-economic interests in global contexts, particularly:
- Trade/environment/climate change interfaces
- Trade-Labour-Human Rights intersections
- Governance of contemporary global challenges
- Legal responses to sustainability issues
Current projects include interdisciplinary work on 'Solid Bulk Cargo Liquefaction: Strategies for Effective Control' (funded by Lloyd's Register Foundation) and 'The WTO’s contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 17'. She serves as Chair of the UK Trade and Sustainable Development Domestic Advisory Group and contributes to multiple editorial boards including the Journal of International Economic Law.
Teaching focuses on Public Law, WTO Law, and Globalisation at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Currently supervises 8 PhD students researching aspects of international economic law and sustainability.
