Liz Armitage-Chan is Professor of Higher Education and Director of the LIVE Centre (Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning) at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), where she is also Course Director for the MSc, Diploma, and Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education. She is affiliated with the Department of Clinical Science and Services at the Hawkshead campus and earned her PhD in Higher Education from the School of Social Science and Public Policy at King's College London.
Her research centers on veterinary professional identity formation, using narrative and qualitative research methods to explore identity development in students, faculty, and curriculum leaders. She investigates how education shapes professional identity and its links to wellbeing, career satisfaction, and cultural context. Her work also addresses emotions in learning, reflective practice, and curriculum leadership.
Liz's recent publications reveal a strong trend in qualitative educational research, particularly in professional identity, emotional engagement, and curriculum innovation in veterinary medicine. She frequently employs narrative inquiry and thematic analysis to understand complex professional transitions and challenges.
She has received research funding from the Council of International Veterinary Medical Education for projects on creative reflection, curriculum leadership identity, and emotional learning. Liz supervises postgraduate students, contributes to doctoral examinations, and serves as an external examiner for Cambridge and Bristol veterinary schools.
She is actively involved in advancing veterinary education through her roles on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, the International Veterinary Assessment Working Group, the AAVMC Professional Development Committee, and the RCVS Subcommittee for the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice.
Liz leads faculty development initiatives, teaches on postgraduate veterinary education programs, and delivers CPD on mentoring, leadership, workplace learning, and professional identity. She advises veterinary schools globally on curriculum design and educational policy.
