Julian Drewe is Professor of Veterinary Epidemiological Surveillance within the Veterinary Epidemiology, Economics and Public Health (VEEPH) group at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). He holds an RCVS Specialist status in Veterinary Epidemiology and is a European Veterinary Specialist in Wildlife Population Health. He serves as the RVC lead for Epidemiological and Statistical Modelling in the WOAH (formerly OIE) Collaborating Centre for Risk Analysis & Modelling, a joint venture with the Animal and Plant Health Agency.
His educational background includes a PhD in Veterinary Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in Wild Animal Health from the Institute of Zoology and RVC, and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from RVC London. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education.
Drewe's research focuses on disease surveillance systems, risk analysis for disease incursions, and improving diagnostic testing in animal populations. He studies diseases that spread between humans, domestic animals, and wildlife through interdisciplinary research combining epidemiology, mathematics, and social sciences. His work particularly emphasizes tuberculosis in badgers, meerkats, and cattle, as well as animal health surveillance evaluation frameworks.
His publications show a strong focus on developing frameworks for surveillance evaluation (SERVAL), analyzing livestock-wildlife contacts, and improving diagnostic approaches for diseases like tuberculosis. His recent work increasingly incorporates machine learning techniques and probabilistic approaches to disease diagnosis and risk assessment.

Drewe supervises multiple PhD students and ECZM residents in Wildlife Population Health. He has developed and leads the MSc module Principles of Epidemiology and Surveillance at RVC and has delivered international workshops on epidemiology across Asia and Africa. His outreach activities include science seminars in local schools focusing on disease transmission networks and pandemic risks.
