Associate Professor Lisa Sarmas is a legal academic at the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne. She holds dual admission as a barrister and solicitor in Victoria and the High Court of Australia since 1991, and has been practicing at the Victorian Bar since 2002. Her teaching focuses on Equity and Trusts (LAWS50033) and Legal Method and Reasoning (LAWS50023) in the Melbourne JD program. Professor Sarmas' research expertise spans family law, trusts law, gender dynamics in legal systems, and legal historiography. She is actively involved in research integrity governance at MLS and contributes to the Obligations Group research center. Her work critically examines issues such as equitable outcomes in property division, legal reform's gendered impacts, and the intersection of poststructuralist theory with equity jurisprudence.
Her legal practice background enriches her academic contributions, particularly in areas like bankruptcy law's family home implications and the evolving role of resulting trusts in Australian law. Professor Sarmas' interdisciplinary approach bridges historical legal analysis with contemporary issues, evident in works re-examining jurisdictional conflicts and uncovering systemic biases in trusts law. She speaks English and Greek, and her scholarly output spans three decades with over 15 major publications addressing core legal challenges in equity, family law, and gender studies.
