Dr Lisa Ooms is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Monash University's Biomedicine Discovery Institute. She is an active researcher in the field of cancer biology, with a focus on PI3K signaling pathways in breast cancer progression. She is currently accepting PhD students and contributes significantly to biomedical discovery through her research and collaborations.

Dr Ooms' research centers on the molecular mechanisms of inositol phosphatases—particularly PIPP and INPP4B—in regulating PI3K signaling. Her work has revealed dual roles of these enzymes as both tumor suppressors and oncogenes depending on cancer context. She investigates how dysregulation of these pathways influences breast cancer initiation, growth, and metastasis, with implications for targeted therapies.
Her recent publications highlight the role of INPP4B in activating Wnt signaling in ER+ breast cancers and the therapeutic potential of pyrvinium. The research outputs demonstrate a strong trend in signal transduction, cancer cell biology, and translational oncology, particularly focusing on lipid phosphatases and their interplay with key oncogenic pathways.
Dr Ooms has received research funding from the NHMRC and Cancer Council Victoria. She has served as a Chief Investigator on multiple projects, including:
- Characterisation of PI3-kinase-dependent signalling networks in breast cancer (NHMRC, 2017–2021)
- A novel oncogenic alliance in breast cancer (NHMRC, 2017–2019)
- Role of INPP4B and related proteins in human cancer (NHMRC, 2013–2015)
- Role of the PIPP lipid phosphatase in cell differentiation and polarity (Cancer Council Victoria, 2004–2006)
Her work is conducted within the Biomedicine Discovery Institute, a leading research center at Monash University focused on advancing understanding of disease mechanisms and developing new therapeutic strategies. She collaborates extensively with Prof Craig Mitchell and other researchers across oncology, biochemistry, and molecular biology disciplines.
