Professor Lisa Maher is a leading academic at UNSW Sydney, serving as Head of the Viral Hepatitis Epidemiology and Prevention Program at the Kirby Institute and as an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow. She is also an Honorary Senior Principal Research Fellow at the Burnet Institute.
Her research spans three decades of international experience in harm reduction and infectious disease prevention among vulnerable populations, including drug users, sex workers, and HIV/AIDS patients, with technical advisory roles for WHO, UNAIDS, and the Global Fund.
Professor Maher has secured over $112 million in grants as an investigator on 113 projects and authored 300+ peer-reviewed publications. She is a Fellow of both the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Her work focuses on public health surveillance, ethnographic/epidemiological research on drug-related harms, and evaluation of infectious disease intervention programs, particularly in marginalized communities across Australia, Asia, and the Pacific.
