Richard Thomas Gray

Associate Professor Richard Thomas Gray is a Senior Research Fellow in the Surveillance, Evaluation and Research Program at the Kirby Institute, University of New South Wales. He leads the Mathematical Epidemiology and Evaluation Research Group and holds an academic appointment in the Faculty of Medicine & Health. His work bridges mathematical modeling with public health policy development across multiple disease areas.

Dr. Gray completed his BSc (Hons) and PhD, establishing a career focused on the quantitative analysis of infectious disease transmission dynamics. His educational background provided the foundation for his expertise in mathematical modeling of complex epidemiological systems.

Gray's research spans multiple critical areas of infectious disease epidemiology with a particular focus on mathematical modeling approaches. His work integrates traditional epidemiological methods with advanced computational techniques to address complex public health challenges. He specializes in modeling the transmission dynamics of HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, SARS-CoV-2, and arboviruses, with recent expansion into climate change impacts on infectious disease patterns. His modeling work directly informs national and international public health policy decisions, particularly regarding elimination targets and intervention strategies.

As a supervisor, Gray mentors early-career researchers in mathematical modeling and infectious disease epidemiology. His collaborations extend across multiple continents, working with Australian departments of health, community organizations, WHO, UNAIDS, and the World Bank. His modeling has directly influenced major public health decisions including the listing of HIV PrEP on Australia's Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and strategies for meeting WHO viral hepatitis elimination targets.
