Gregory John Dore

Scientia Professor Gregory John Dore serves as Head of the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney, and as an Infectious Diseases Physician at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. With 25 years of experience in viral hepatitis and HIV research, clinical care, and public health policy, Professor Dore has established himself as an internationally recognized expert in HCV natural history and epidemiology, therapeutic strategies for acute and chronic HCV infection (particularly among people who inject drugs), and HCV elimination strategies.

Professor Dore established the St Vincent's Hospital viral hepatitis service in 1999, developing it into one of Australia's leading hepatitis C treatment services with special focus on marginalized populations. His research interests span viral hepatitis epidemiology, therapeutic interventions, public health policy development, and elimination strategies, with particular emphasis on vulnerable groups including people who inject drugs and homeless persons.

His scientific achievements include being awarded the NHMRC Practitioner Fellowship three times (2007, 2012, 2017), the Frank Fenner ASID Award (2007), Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science (2016), the prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Prize in Infectious Diseases (2020), and recognition as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in clinical medicine (2020, 2021).

Professor Dore has secured substantial research funding including an NHMRC Investigator Grant (Leadership 3; 2022-2026: $1.92M), multiple NHMRC Program and Partnership Grants totaling over $19 million, and NIH R01 Grants as Chief Investigator totaling approximately $6 million USD. He has authored 722 journal articles along with numerous book chapters, conference papers, and other scholarly works.

His academic qualifications include a PhD from UNSW (2001), MPH from University of Sydney (1997), FRACP (1995), and medical degrees (MBBS and BSc) from UNSW (1987).
