Behzad Hajarizadeh is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), affiliated with the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program. He holds a MD, MPH, and PhD in Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology). He is an NHMRC Emerging Leader Fellow and has held roles including Research Fellow at La Trobe University and Senior Research Officer at Iran's Ministry of Health/UNAIDS. His research focuses on viral hepatitis epidemiology, particularly HCV/HBV management in vulnerable populations, prison healthcare, and global elimination strategies. His work combines clinical practice, public health policy, and translational research to address liver disease disparities.
- Educations: MD (Medical Practitioner), MPH (Public Health), PhD (Clinical Epidemiology)
- Affiliations: Kirby Institute (UNSW), Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM), European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), International Network on Hepatitis in Substance Users (INHSU)
Research Interests: HCV/HBV natural history, reinfection dynamics, prison-based interventions, elimination program evaluation, and healthcare access for marginalized groups. His studies emphasize real-world outcomes of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), reinfection risk among people who inject drugs (PWID), and policy-driven hepatitis reduction strategies.
Recent articles highlight global HCV elimination progress, reinfection post-DAAs, and prison healthcare's critical role in viral suppression. He has contributed to WHO hepatitis elimination frameworks and Australian treatment scale-up initiatives.
- Awards: NHMRC Emerging Leader Fellowship
- Grants: Leads Australian prison-based HCV studies (SToP-C) and global elimination tracking projects.
He advises on viral hepatitis strategies at national and international levels, emphasizing 'treatment-as-prevention' approaches and equity in healthcare access.
