Dr. Lisa Lazarus is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Community Health Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. She specializes in critical social science research focused on community-based methodologies in HIV sciences. Her work emphasizes democratizing research partnerships and centering community voices in global health interventions. Dr. Lazarus has collaborated with organizations in Kenya, India, Canada, and Ukraine, particularly with sex workers and people who use substances, to address health inequities and advocate for community-led solutions.
Education: Dr. Lazarus holds a PhD in Community Health Sciences (University of Manitoba, 2015–2019), an MPH from Simon Fraser University (2008–2010), and degrees in Social Work and Psychology/Sociology from McGill University.
Research interests include community-based participatory research, HIV prevention and treatment, critical social sciences, and the role of marginalized communities in defining health intervention success. She critiques traditional metrics of 'success' in global health and advocates for inclusive, community-driven approaches.
Notable awards include the Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (2019) and CIHR Doctoral Research Award (2019). Her work has been published in high-impact journals, focusing on HIV program sustainability, pandemic response equity, and decolonizing global health research.
Dr. Lazarus is an Affiliate Member of the Institute for Global Public Health (IGPH). Her research extends to conflict-affected regions (e.g., Ukraine) and explores how crises impact health systems and marginalized populations.
