Dr. Lisa Jane Brighton is a Lecturer in Applied Health Research at King’s College London, affiliated with the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation within the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care. She holds a BSc in Psychology from the University of Bath and advanced degrees (MSc in Palliative Care, PhD in Health Services Research) from King’s College London. Her career progression includes roles from research assistant to her current academic position, with an ESRC post-doctoral fellowship in health psychology.
Her research focuses on psychological and social aspects of chronic respiratory disease, rehabilitation for frail populations, and breathlessness management. She co-developed an online forum for patient involvement in palliative care research and co-chaired the Cicely Saunders Institute’s public involvement executive group (2018–2020). Her work influences international guidelines via organizations like the European Respiratory Society and American Thoracic Society.
Key contributions include establishing a European Respiratory Society subgroup for psychologists and behavioral scientists, and co-leading public engagement activities. She teaches on the MSc Palliative Care and MSc Health Psychology programs. Her recent publications address frailty in COPD, breathlessness interventions, and geriatric assessment in pulmonary rehabilitation.
Professional highlights include a 2023 European Respiratory Society statement on frailty in chronic lung disease, and a 2023 American Thoracic Society workshop report on respiratory rehabilitation.
