Her research focuses on oceans governance, political ecology, and innovative methodologies like Collaborative Event Ethnography. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (1998) and an M.A. from the University of Toronto (1993).
Her work examines how science, state/non-state actors, and socio-political scales shape ocean governance outcomes, particularly regarding blue carbon, fisheries, and marine protected areas. She advocates for equitable approaches in global environmental policy and emphasizes participatory research methods.
Recent grants include projects on equity in blue carbon interventions and ocean ontologies. Her publications analyze governance tensions, high seas negotiations, and aquaculture management. Notable awards include her named professorship.
Key themes in her articles include ocean equity, policy effectiveness, and the interplay between technology and conservation. She explores how data portals and spatial planning tools reshape marine management. Her work bridges theory and practice, addressing both global policy frameworks and local community dynamics.
