Lindsey Stewart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Memphis, joining in 2017. Her work bridges black feminism, African American philosophy, and social/political philosophy, emphasizing regional dynamics shaped by her Louisiana upbringing.
Research focuses on black feminist conceptions of political agency, examining intersections of sexuality, region, religion, and class. Her manuscript The Conjuring of America explores how black women used conjure traditions to navigate oppression and shape U.S. cultural-political history.
Publications interrogate themes like Zora Neale Hurston's legacy, abolitionist traditions, and Beyoncé's Lemonade, analyzing conjure, refusal, and cultural practices as tools for resistance. Articles appear in Hypatia, Signs, and British Journal for the History of Philosophy.
