Jan Gustafsson

Jan Gustafsson is an Associate Professor at the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen. His scholarly work centers on Latin American cultural production, historical narratives, and political discourse, with deep expertise in utopian theory and identity formations across the region. He actively contributes to the Centre for Latin American Studies and engages with contemporary debates on indigenous movements, feminism, and human-nature relations in Latin America.

Research Focus: Gustafsson's work examines utopian thinking as both historical phenomenon and analytical framework, particularly in revolutionary Cuba and Andean contexts. He investigates intersections of semiotics, environmental philosophy, and political culture through literary analysis, photography studies, and music anthropology. His current projects explore narrative fiction's relationship with visual media, subjectivity in Latin American musical traditions, and utopian dimensions of Cuban revolutionary politics, revealing how cultural production shapes collective identities and social imaginaries.

Publication Trends: Recent outputs (2022-2024) demonstrate increasing transdisciplinary engagement, merging literary studies with environmental humanities and political theory. His scholarship consistently centers Latin American perspectives while connecting to global discourses on utopia, identity, and resistance. Key thematic clusters include Cuban revolutionary utopias, Andean ecosemiotics, transnational memory, and the political dimensions of artistic expression across the Americas.

Academic Leadership: Gustafsson has supervised multiple doctoral candidates including Helene Balslev Clausen (Juntos pero no revueltos) and Julia Suárez Krabbe (At the Pace of Cassiopeia), with current supervision of Elisabeth Benedict Christensen's work on undocumented migration. He served as Director of the Center for the Study of the Americas at CBS (2010-2012), coordinated the 'Area Studies' research group, and regularly participates in PhD assessment committees across Nordic institutions. His administrative contributions extend to co-founding the Danish Network for Researchers on Latin America (LA-Net) and organizing landmark conferences like 'Nation and Utopia in Latin America' (2007).
