Lijuan Qian is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the Department of Music, University College Cork (National University of Ireland). She holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Sheffield (2011) and an MA in Musicology from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (2005). Her research focuses on Chinese Popular Music, Applied Ethnomusicology, and Digital Media Studies, particularly addressing issues of cultural heritage preservation among ethnic minorities and women in China.

Research Interests: Dr. Qian’s work examines the intersection of music with digital media, cultural identity, and social class in China. She leads the ERC-funded ECura project (2022–2027), investigating how ethnic minority communities in southwest China use TikTok and mobile technologies to preserve traditional music. Her publications include A Tolerant Mainstream: The Pop Song in China in the 1980s (2016) and translations of key Western music theory texts.
