Jonathan Stock is a Professor of Music at University College Cork (UCC), where he previously served as Head of the Department of Music and Head of the School of Music and Theatre. Specializing in ethnomusicology, his research focuses on the music of East Asia, particularly China and Taiwan. He also explores applied ethnomusicology, English folk music, music education, and the global history and theory of ethnomusicology.
- Education: PhD from Queen’s University of Belfast, followed by a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship and roles at the University of Durham and the University of Sheffield, where he founded an ethnomusicology program.
- Professional Roles: Former Associate Dean for Research at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, editor of journals like The World of Music and Ethnomusicology Forum, and UK AHRC panel chair.
Research Interests: Stock’s work spans applied ethnomusicology, Chinese and Taiwanese music, English traditional music, music education, and interdisciplinary approaches. He has supervised over 20 PhD students and authored/co-authored numerous books and articles.
Grants & Collaborations: Recipient of grants from the Irish Research Council, Economic & Social Research Council (UK), and others, including projects on Chinese music research, Taiwanese musical culture, and digital musicology. Collaborations include the National High-End Foreign Experts Program with Yunnan University.
Labs/Teams: Founded the Centre for Applied and Interdisciplinary Research in Music and contributed to initiatives like the White Rose East Asia Centre.
